Client-server installation on Windows

Information required for client-server installation

Before starting the server installation procedure, make sure you have the following information at your disposal:

·         your user name

·         your company name

·         the start menu icon folder where Objecteering icons will be added

·         the installation directory where Objecteering will be installed.  This directory must be shared, so that Objecteering clients can access it from their workstations.

The above information is identical to that necessary to a stand alone installation.  The following information is specific to server installation:

·         the shared resources folder, through which Objecteering clients will access the Objecteering server.  This folder must be accessible in read-write mode from both the server and the client workstations.

·         your Objecteering license file.  This license file will be requested and MUST be provided during the installation procedure.

Note:      If you are reinstalling using the same site number (which figures in the license file), you must copy the contents of your former "site" directory into the new installation directory.

License for client-server installation

When Objecteering is installed in client-server mode, the associated license file is deployed on the server.  The server then manages a number of floating licenses, which can be used on any client workstation.

To obtain a valid Objecteering license file, please contact your Objecteering Software account manager or visit our website at www.objecteering.com.

FLEXlm user documentation

When Objecteering is installed in client-server mode, the complete FLEXlm user guide is deployed in the OBJING_PATH\bundle\flexlm\flexuser directory. For more information concerning FLEXlm, please refer to this user guide.

This user guide is copyrighted to Macrovision.

Server installation procedure

To install Objecteering in server mode, simply insert the Objecteering CD-ROM, launch "Objecteering6.1_Pxxxxx_WIN.exe", and then let yourself be guided by the installation wizard.

After the first three screens (the Welcome screen, the End User License Agreement screen, and the Customer Information screen), the next screen to appear is the "Installation mode" screen, in which you should select the "Server" installation mode.

Click on the server installation icon to continue the installation procedure.

IMPORTANT:       From this point on, you need to have administrator rights, in order to be able to create and share directories!

After selecting the server installation mode, continue by carrying out the following steps:

·         Select the Objecteering installation directory.

·         Select the start menu icon folder, where Objecteering icons will be installed.

·         Configure the client installation, by naming the server's shared resource, through which Objecteering clients will access this particular Objecteering server.  This name must be in UNC form.  This shared resource must be accessible in read-write mode from both this server and the client workstations, and must be directed to the Objecteering installation directory, as defined in the previous "Destination folder" screen.

After carrying out these operations, you must now select your valid Objecteering license file (suffixed ".lic"), as shown in Figure 5.  During server mode installation, this step is obligatory!

To use Objecteering in server mode, the FLEXlm License Manager service is required.  If this service is not present and you want to install it, you should simply check the tickbox in the above screen.

Note:      Before installing the FLEXlm License Manager service, please ensure that no other FLEXlm services are present.  If other services are present, DO NOT install this service!  For information on how to make another FLEXlm service also manage the license manager service, please refer to the FLEXlm Manager documentation.

After selecting your Objecteering license file, simply review your installation parameters in the screen which appears, and then launch the installation procedure proper by clicking on the "Install" button.

Windows client installation procedure

The set up of a Windows client is very simple and straightforward.  When Objecteering is installed on the server, the installation wizard automatically prepares the associated client installation procedure.  This client installation procedure defines much of the information necessary to the deployment of Objecteering on a Windows client workstation (including the installation directory, the start menu icon folder and the server's shared resource), thereby making deployment even easier.

The Windows client setup procedure consists of the following steps:

·         connecting to the server from the client workstation

·         running a special pre-configured setup program that has been prepared on the server during the server set up procedure. Thus, no particular configuration needs to be carried out when deploying a client, and the client is immediately operational and configured after its setup is terminated.

Note:      The client installation procedure can only be run once the server has been properly set up and configured.

The following installation options are still configurable:

·         The installation directory

·         The start menu icon folder

Proposed values for these options are predefined on the server.  In most cases, these default values should be recommended by the person in charge of the client-server deployment.

The setup program for installing a client is located at:

\\myWindowsServer\PathToTheServer\setup\client4win\setup.exe

where "myWindowsServer" stands for the name of the server on the network, and "PathToTheServer" is the name of the resource shared by the server with client workstations, which was defined during server setup.

The location of the client installation procedure is indicated in the "Installation summary" and "Installation complete" screens appearing during server installation.

To deploy Objecteering on a Windows client workstation, simply launch the client installation procedure from the indicated location, and then let yourself be guided by the installation wizard.

Linux client installation procedure

The set up of a Linux client is very simple and straightforward.  When Objecteering is installed on the server, the installation wizard automatically prepares the associated client installation procedure.  This client installation procedure defines much of the information necessary to the deployment of Objecteering on a Linux client workstation, thereby making deployment even easier.

The Linux client setup procedure consists of the following steps:

·         connecting to the server from the client workstation

·         running a special pre-configured setup program that has been prepared on the server during the server set up procedure. Thus, no particular configuration needs to be carried out when deploying a client, and the client is immediately operational and configured after its setup is terminated.

Note:      The client installation procedure can only be run once the server has been properly set up and configured.

The setup program for installing a client is located at:

/PathToTheServer/setup/client4linux/setupLinuxClient.sh

where "PathToTheServer" is the name of the resource shared by the server with client workstations, which was defined during server setup.

The location of the client installation procedure is indicated in the "Installation summary" and "Installation complete" screens appearing during server installation.

To deploy Objecteering on a Linux client workstation, simply launch the client installation procedure from the indicated location, and then let yourself be guided by the installation wizard.
